What is Dental Sedation?
If you are undergoing a long or complex procedure, dental sedation can help you feel relaxed and allow you to receive the dental care you need without feeling pain or undue stress.
Dental sedation, such as nitrous oxide or oral sedation, are medications that can block pain signals or calm anxious patients during a dental procedure to make patients more comfortable during long procedures and even make time feel like it's passing more quickly.
Whether you're coming in for a routine checkup or an oral surgery procedure, our dentists will take the time to discuss any concerns you may have and help you decide whether sedation is right for you.
Do You Experience Dental Anxiety?
It is extremely common for patients to feel fear or anxiety when thinking about or undergoing dental procedures, and it can cause many people to avoid seeking dental care even when they really need it.
Avoiding dental treatments can lead to a number of oral health issues, such as gum disease and tooth decay. That's why we want to do our part to help anxious patients feel relaxed when they visit us. If you have dental anxiety, we are happy to talk to you about your concerns, work at your pace, and take breaks if needed.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide (or laughing gas) is inhaled through the mouth and nose. The medication can calm patients even though they remain awake and able to communicate. It also tends to lessen anxiety, increase pain threshold, reduce gag reflex, and make time pass more quickly for a patient.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedatives are pills or liquids prescribed by your dentist and taken orally before a dental appointment. The medication leaves you awake for the procedure, but the sedative effect will cause feelings of relaxation and reduce discomfort caused by dental treatment.
