What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. Tooth extractions are generally performed when a less invasive option would be ineffective, or if a tooth is compromising the health of your mouth.
While preserving a natural tooth is always the preferred option, there are some cases where it may not be feasible.
When a tooth is severely damaged, causing pain or leading to other oral health problems, it may have to be removed by your dentist.
The extraction process is performed under local anesthesia to help ensure that you do not experience pain during the procedure.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to erupt in the back corners of a normal adult mouth, usually between 17 and 25 years of age.
Wisdom teeth are commonly extracted because they cause pain or discomfort if they erupt on an angle, or if there isn't enough space in the mouth for them to erupt properly. They can also cause oral hygiene problems, as it can be difficult to reach the back of the mouth with the toothbrush.
The first step of the procedure will be your dentist assessing the positioning and condition of the teeth to determine if extraction is necessary. If so, the extraction process involves numbing the area, removing the teeth with forceps and then stitching up the gum.
Removing Damaged Teeth
In cases where a tooth is too badly damaged to be saved, it must be extracted. If a tooth requires extraction, your dentist will discuss options for tooth replacement with you, including dental bridges, dental crowns, and dentures.
After a tooth extraction, our goal is to help you reestablish optimal oral health by preventing further problems from developing.
If you need a tooth extraction, our team at Midtown Kelowna Dental will explain the various tooth replacement options that are available and recommend the solutions that best fit your needs.
Dental implants and bone grafting may also be used to augment the remaining tooth socket.
